Where to Go on Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

Your journey to encounter the majestic mountain gorillas begins in Uganda’s southwest corner, near its borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The renowned Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park stands out as the country’s most famous gorilla trekking destination, easily accessible via a short internal flight from Entebbe International Airport. Additionally, further south lies Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, offering a more exclusive gorilla trekking experience amidst its lush landscapes.

Exploring Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Home to 11 habituated gorilla families and several others reserved for scientific study, Bwindi offers unparalleled opportunities for gorilla trekking adventures. Depending on the day, your trek may lead you through one of the four trailheads: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo. Our experienced guides will lead you on a remarkable journey, tracking gorilla families since dawn to ensure an unforgettable encounter with these magnificent creatures.

Discovering Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

For a more exclusive gorilla trekking experience, venture into Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, often combined with trips to Volcanoes National Park in neighboring Rwanda. Despite its smaller size, Mgahinga boasts unique trails and the Nyakagazi group, a resident gorilla family consisting of approximately ten individuals. With fewer permits available, Mgahinga offers an intimate and rewarding gorilla trekking experience amidst its pristine wilderness.

Limitations and Considerations

While the experience of gorilla trekking in Uganda is unparalleled, it’s essential to consider limitations such as the availability of permits, which are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Permits, costing $700 per person per trek, contribute to the conservation efforts aimed at preserving Uganda’s gorilla population for future generations. It’s important to note that physical contact with the gorillas is prohibited to protect their health, and trekkers displaying any symptoms of illness will not be permitted to participate.
